Job Description
Tennessee State University Department of Athletics invites applications for the Assistant Softball Coach.Job duties:
- Assist the Head women’s softball coach in recruiting, instructing, and retaining highly skilled student-athletes for the softball team.
- Coordinate activities through the Head Softball Coach.
- Assist with budget preparations and operate within the approved budget allocations
- Provide instruction to softball student-athletes on the fundamentals, details and strategies of softball as assigned by the Head Coach.
- Adhere to all policies and regulations of the Director of Athletics, University, OVC and NCAA.
- Assist with the marketing and promotion of softball.
- Counsel student athletes in sport participation, personal development, and academics.
- Work with the Admissions Office to enroll student-athletes.
- Assist in monitoring student-athlete’s academic progress.
- In consultation with University Advancement and the Athletic Director, assist in fundraising in both softball and with major fund raisers in the Athletic Department.
- Assist Head Coach in developing game strategies.
- Assist in maintenance of softball field and practice areas.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to effectively teach fundamentals, position details and strategies of softball during preparation and practice sessions.
Ability to motivate individuals and the team successfully.
Ability to travel and recruit student athletes.
Ability to learn and comply with all policies and regulations of the University, TBR, OVC and NCAA.
Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community, and the public.
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to achieve certification to drive student-athletes to team athletic events.
Ability to scout opponents.
Flexible with hours typical 9-5 Monday-Friday with nights, weekends, and travel.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of experience in coaching or administration of softball programs at the high school, collegiate, or equivalent level. Knowledge of NCAA rules certification. Knowledge of University/TBR and OVC (Ohio Valley Conference) policies and regulations. Must pass NCAA recruiting test within first 30 days of hire.
