The JC Raulston Arboretum is seeking to add a new team member to the Education Team. This position will work closely with the education team and all of the education programs offered at the JCRA. The position will have a key focus on family garden education programs as well as weekend education experiences for garden visitors. This position will research program needs, design and develop programs, collaborate with others to coordinate and manage the programs, and evaluate these programs. The position will help to develop the team’s yearly program calendar and program goals and to evaluate the education programs.
This position requires a flexible schedule that includes weekend hours.
The JC Raulston Arboretum is a nationally acclaimed public garden with one of the largest and most diverse collections of landscape plants adapted for landscape use in the Southeast. Part of NC State University, the JCRA serves as a classroom for students, staff and faculty as well as a green space for the community to explore and interact with plants from all over the world. The JCRA is open every day to the public with free admission.
Part of the JCRA’s mission is to provide educational experiences to the general public, students of all ages and the green industry. We maintain a vibrant calendar of programs ranging from free, online programming to weekend symposiums to summer camps for children and youth.
As part of the education team, the position will have the opportunity to provide extraordinary educational experiences for all ages with the JCRA’s diverse plant collection as the classroom. As an education program specialist, you will be interacting with program participants, general garden visitors, supporters of the JCRA and the NC State University community and will inspire them to deepen their knowledge and connection to the JCRA through delivery of educational programming and garden experiences.

- Prepare, organize and deliver engaging and educational programs, activities and tours in alignment with the JCRA’s mission, vision and goals
- Develop and implement programs for diverse groups by determining target audiences and objectives
- Research and seek out new program opportunities
- Set calendar for program offerings, coordinate space needs and manage resources needed for program delivery
- Evaluate and analyze education programs and content
- Engage with guests in a friendly and enthusiastic way, answer questions and attend to guest needs to ensure a positive experience while visiting the JCRA
- Attend workshops/trainings, classes, seminars and lectures to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in programs
- Work with volunteers as well as work in a mentor capacity with summer education interns and other student workers
- Assist in the overall success of the JCRA by being part of large events, member and volunteer events and other organization programs
- Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience/Education
- Bachelor’s degree in a natural science program (Agriculture, Horticulture, Environmental Science or a related field) or education program (environmental education, extension education, parks and recreation or a related field); certified teaching experience OR two years of comparable experience

- Ability to adapt quickly and positively to unexpected changes such as inclement weather or other unexpected events
- Physical ability to lift materials (bins of program materials, art supplies, plants and soil, water cooler, etc) and operate garden equipment.
- Ability to learn and adapt to various technology programs to complete tasks
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- Experience planning, implementing, and/or facilitating events/programs in an outdoor setting.
- Current Environmental Education Certification or working towards certification.
- Minimum of 2 years of program experience including running and implementing education programs.
- Experience with plants, gardening or horticulture (public gardens, nature preserves, garden centers or other botanically focused environments)
- Experience with volunteers and/or training groups of people to perform tasks
- Multilingual or ability to translate educational materials to Spanish
Required License or Certification
- Valid driver’s license
- CPR/First Aid certified or ability to be certified by start date
