We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative Mechanical / Electrical Engineering Intern to join the Engineering and Test Group (KME) where we specialize in advancing technological capabilities for Navy operations through development and testing of sophisticated sensor systems and complex electro-mechanical systems for maritime and undersea applications. As a member of our team, you'll contribute to critical system development and experimental efforts. You will be joining a diverse team committed to crafting an environment of innovation.

 

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern

  • Your primary responsibility will be working with a diverse team to  
    • Help design mechanical parts and assemblies using computer aided design (CAD) programs such as SolidWorks.
    • Learn the use of modeling, simulation, and finite element analysis (FEA) software as needed to support system design.
    • Generate design images and provide documentation.
    • Work with fabrication staff and other specialists to plan for and lead fabrication and assembly design.
    • Help to analyze and test systems destined for a maritime environment.
  • You could also assist in the brainstorming and development of new initiatives/concepts in maritime applications through research and development (R&D) efforts including conceptualizing components and assemblies, as well as generating formal design drawings and documentation using SolidWorks and other software tools.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are working toward a Bachelor’s, Master's or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Are inquisitive and are willing to learn new skills and expand your capabilities.
  • Have completed 200 level or higher coursework relevant to Mechanical Engineering covering Physics, Mechanics, Dynamics, CAD and FEA
  • Have familiarity with engineering and software tools such as CAD, Solidworks, C, C++, Arduino, MATLAB, Microsoft Office
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 Scale. Note: When prompted to upload attachments, please include a copy of your college transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll exceed our minimum requirements if you...

  • Are proficient in engineering and software tools such as CAD, Solidworks, C, C++, Arduino, MATLAB, Altium
  • Hold an active Secret or higher-level clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. $22.60 Hourly

Maximum Rate

$47.95 Hourly
