Salary is commensurate with education and experience.


The role of the Director, Campus Safety and Security is to provide policies, training and overseeing operations; reviewing, revising and creating college safety plans; ensuring dissemination and appropriate testing and compliance with the College; meeting with outside agencies as visits are made in security and safety areas and provides supervision to security officers at all campus locations.

The Director, Campus Safety and Security reports to the Chief Operations Officer (COO).
 

 

Examples of Duties

Oversee the operations of the security officers at all four campus locations. Including, but not limited to:

  • Ensure that policies involving safety and security are current, applicable, understood and enforced.
  • Recruit, interview and train security officers.
  • Plan, assign and direct work.
  • Educate officers in the prevention and deterrence of crime and violation of college policies.
  • Ensure all personnel evaluations within the administrative unit are competed annually.
  • Provide for a traffic control on a daily basis and during special functions such as graduation, registration, etc.
  • Provide for handicap parking and other special event parking as appropriate.
  • Perform the duties and responsibilities of a campus security officer.
  • Confer with representatives of local government to ensure cooperation and coordination of the college's activities with law enforcement and agencies responding to emergencies. 
  • Establish operational procedures for activities such as traffic control, guarding and patrolling physical property, orienting and monitoring of students and investigation of accidents and acts that violate college policy.
  • Enforce the criminal and traffic laws of the State of North Carolina.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of general law enforcement, including but not limited to, the general enforcement of the criminal laws of the State of North Carolina and specific Campus Police Department procedures.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are in place to prevent, detect and deter crime on all college campuses.
  • Enforce the local ordinances of the host jurisdiction in which each campus and facility is located.
  • Respond to emergency calls for service.
  • Investigate and/or coordinate the investigation of all crimes on college campuses.
  • Prepare investigative, incident, activity and similar reports; investigate and handle complaints.
  • Collect and secure evidence concerning crimes on college campuses.
  • Develop, implement and maintain college emergency response plans, including development and annual updates of plans, training of employees and students and coordination with local authorities.
  • Assist in the preparation of statistical reports required by the College, state and federal agencies.
  • Ensure the development and evaluation of the Unit Action Plan (UAP) for the administrative unit and the resulting assessment action report.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Five years of successful law enforcement experience.
  • Four years of supervisory experience.
  • Current certification as a law enforcement officer through NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, NC Sheriff's Education and Training Standards Commission or possession of an equivalent out of state certification making the candidate eligible for probationary certification from one of the commissions.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Possess a valid NC driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain Armed Guard Certifications within 1 year of employment.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • College or university campus police experience.
  • Experience writing and enforcing safety policies.

  • NC general statutes and local ordinances.
Skills:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to:
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Speak effectively before groups.
  • Establish appropriate relationships with faculty, staff and victims and citizens of the community.
