Job Description

The Security Captain reports to the Director of Security and is responsible for supervising the security Lieutenants and Sergeants. The Security Captain is responsible for providing a safe and secure campus that enhances a quality learning environment for employees, students, and guests. The Security Captain ensures the physical security for campus property, and equipment through adherence to department procedures and policies. The Security Captain is responsible for ensuring all security personnel are properly trained and able to perform their duties to the best of their abilities to ensure a safe campus at all times. The Security Captain may be required to work non-business hours for operational effectiveness.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages, supervises, assigns, and evaluates security supervisors, Lieutenants and Sergeants. Ensures supervisors perform required job activities and responsibilities. These include:
    • Evaluating, counseling and mentoring subordinates and shift personnel on job performance
      • Oversee training for new employees assigned to shift
      • Conduct performance evaluations and mentor security officers as needed
      • Monitor the training progress of new security employees that are assigned to shift
    • Supervise progressive disciplinary action up to and including termination
    • Conducts interviews
    • Planning daily assignments and conducting daily briefing for security operations
    • Assess operational and equipment needs
    • Conduct daily shift change briefings
  • Responsible for reviewing the weekly schedules and approving security personnel timesheets
  • Manage shift operations to ensure that the campus is a safe and secure environment
    • Delegate specific tasks to appropriate personnel and informs the Director of Security regarding potential problems/issues and recommend possible solutions
    • Manages access control systems
    • Manages the patrolling, inspecting, and securing of premises
    • Manages emergency operation for incidents on campus
    • Coordination with law enforcement officers and/or fire department officials, or other emergency responders such as EMT’s and provide emergency assistance as needed
    • Reviews Security Officer Daily Logs and reports any issues to the Director of Security and/or Chief Operating Officer
    • Manages the security camera system with a high degree of knowledge and proficiency
    • Manages visitor management system
    • Manages parking enforcement of all University operated parking lots, both on and off campus
  • Operates fire alarm panel
  • Prepare written reports to include, but not limited to, incident reports, assists with preparing annual Cleary Report, and campus crime logs
    • Responding, compiling, and reporting all information in regard to theft, alarms, accidents, and other incidents that may occur
  • Report all building utility/service issues, as observed, to the Facilities Department
  • Monitors alarms/panels for emergencies that might arise
  • Serves as a member of the University Security Committee, University Behavioral Intervention Team, and University Crisis Management Team
  • Responsible for immediately reporting any issues regarding University vehicles operated by the Security Department or other University personnel to the Director of Facilities
  • Responsible for developing and monitoring that proper controls are in place for University master keys/box and vehicle keys that are available to be check-out of inventory by authorized University personnel or third party contractors
  • Responsible to ensure vehicle log sheets are properly completed
  • Other duties assigned

Qualifications:

 


Education:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D required
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or comparable training is highly desired
  • POST training, or comparable, is preferred

Experience:

  • 6 years of security or law enforcement experience
  • 3 years previous supervisor security or law enforcement experience
Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to handle high stress situations
  • Ability to provide leadership and mentor subordinates
  • Ability to team build
  • Proactive mindset in regards to protective measures
  • Possession of a valid Nevada driver’s license and ability/clearance to drive company vehicles
  • Ability to provide excellent leadership and team building mindset
  • Ability to provide command and control in emergencies and high stress situations
  • Excellent Customer Service Skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and be proficient in MS Office suite of software to include MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
  • Ability to problem-solve and multi-task in a busy environment
  • Must have sufficient hearing to respond to normal verbal speech, alarms, and radio and telephone communications
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity to read and understand faculty/staff listings, posted orders, maps, computer screens, check identification, and to distinguish the faces of faculty/staff, contractors, vendors, guests and visitors
  • Must be able to stand, walk and/or drive for up to 90% of the assigned shift
  • Must have a command of the English language that is easily understood
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to operate handheld radios and communication equipment
  • Ability to work all shifts
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be CPR certified
