Position Summary

 

The Adult Education Instructor is responsible for the day-to-day instruction and supervision of adult learners. These individuals are attending class for the purpose of improving basic skills in order to obtain their GED. Major emphasis in this program is to become gainfully employed and/or to retain employment.

Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System salary schedule D-3 (100% Grant Funded).

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:

 

  • Performs classroom instructor responsibilities including but not limited to: Creates and administers assessment instruments to diagnose, evaluate, and place adult learners in the adult education program; Plans, organizes, and instructs courses in appropriate skills areas as identified in assessments in the day, evening, and/or online on an assigned Campus; Selects materials and chooses teaching styles that address individual learning styles; Provides a respectful and supportive learning environment, including the classroom conflict and problem management; Effectively teaches in both traditional and distance education formats; Plans and implements activities for the classroom that provides learning opportunities that draw upon and extend learner’s knowledge, skills, and interests while using technology to aid learning; Conducts pre- and post-tests on participants in the program to measure skills improvement and success; Creates and disseminates in-person and virtual guidance for all adult learners; Submits reports and data and prepares accurate documentation related to grades, participant progress, files and program efficiency and effectiveness; and Refers students to other agencies as necessary.
  • Utilizes the results of a properly administered assessment instrument and develop a plan of instruction (POI) that identifies each objective and/or skill for which each learner has demonstrated non- and/or partial-mastery. Administers assessment instruments to diagnose, evaluate, and place adult learners in adult education program.
  • Requires adult learners to engage in analysis, investigation, and interpretation as part of the learning process. Assist with learner intake and orientation by: Providing a welcoming, encouraging, and respectful atmosphere; Engaging in an exchange of information with entering adult learners; Providing the programs philosophy, goals, instructional services, schedules, attendance policies, and any other relevant information.
  • Provides instructional workshops on various topics such as: financial literacy, career pathways, time management, preparing to enter the workforce and/or college, goal setting, problem solving, coping skills, becoming proactive, etc.
  • Provides coaching/navigation and goal setting instruction to students, ensuring goals are realistic and achievable.
  • Assists with career advising of program participants.
  • Assists with preparation and distribution of publicity materials and learner recruitment.
  • Assists with preparation and implementation of program activities such as workshops, in-service training, graduation, etc.
  • Conveys the expectation of success to adult learners.
  • Supports state and national adult education and literacy advocacy organizations.
  • Participates in committee assignments assist with advocating adult education in the community.
  • Visits other classes for the purpose of observation, curriculum consultation, and coordination as directed by the Program Director.
  • Assists with grant applications and proposals as directed by the Program Director.

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications

 
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and multiple off-campus sites, as needed.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication, presentational, and writing skills.
  • Experience with computer programs and software.
  • Ability to work well with others in an innovative team environment.
 

Preferred Qualifications

 
  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Teaching experience at the K-12 or higher education level.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Adult Education and life-long learning.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college.
  • Commitment to all students and faculty including those of diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Experience in multimedia presentation of classroom lectures and laboratory activities.
  • Demonstrated speaking and writing skills.
  • Understanding of the broad range of students' abilities in an open admissions college and the ability to communicate to the community college student population.
  • Proven successful teaching experience at the community college level.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.
Tier I - Pays 7.50% monthly. State matches 13.57% (effective 10/01/24)
Tier II – Pays 6.20% monthly. State matches 12.60% (effective 10/01/24)
Law Enforcement Officers:
Tier I-Pays 8.50% monthly. State matches 13.57% (effective 10/01/24)
Tier II- Pays 7.20% monthly. State matches 12.60% (effective 10/01/24)

Health Insurance
PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA.
