Job Description

This posting is to establish a pool of qualified applicants. SAS may not be actively recruiting. Applications submitted will remain active for up to one (1) year. Under the supervision of the SAS Academic Support Services Specialist, SAS tutors will perform tutoring duties, and other duties as assigned, in the following capacities: providing guidance in learning of subject matter, tutoring students one-on-one in Math/English subject areas; workshops on topics such as presentation preparation, time management, online learning tools, and study skills; providing assistance to students in regards to the operations of Student Accessibility Services and all of its services and resources; completing accurate and timely paperwork; as well as other related duties.
  • Provide clear tutoring to students in one-on-one sessions (i.e. in person and/or online).
  • Provide workshops to students in group settings (i.e. in person and/or online).
  • Maintain and exhibit professionalism when conducting oneself as a tutor.
  • Maintain currency of tutoring pedagogy and best practices for tutoring.
  • Attend/complete all required SAS Tutoring Services trainings and meetings.
  • Assist in promoting and administering Service Area Outcome surveys to students.
  • Assist with the promotion of SAS Tutoring Services to students and faculty.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all students who use SAS Tutoring Services and securely maintain all data collected during the operations of the SAS Tutoring Services.
  • Assist with other SAS Tutoring Services related duties.
  • Act on constructive feedback and evaluations from the SAS Academic Support Services Specialist and SAS Staff

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Education:
  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalent, or higher, and Proof of completion of at least 12 college semester units
  • OR proof of current enrollment as a full-time (12 semester unit minimum) college student.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Completion of specific course may be required with at least a 3.3 grade equivalent in order to tutor the course.
Skills and Qualities
  • Organizational and recordkeeping skills
  • Technological and recordkeeping skills to conduct online/remote sessions and utilize SVBC's Learning Management System
  • Clear and professional communicator, engaging and relatable to students, empathetic listener.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff, and instructors.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school preferred.
  • Tutoring experience, preferably college-level
  • Experience assisting with the academic instruction of students with disabilities is desirable, preferably college-level.
  • Additional specialized training in education or a related field is desirable, preferably college-level.
  • Bilingual (Spanish, ASL, etc.).
  • Faculty recommendation.
  • Proficiency in multiple disciplines

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Employment Requirements


  • Live scan is required.
  • Must complete TB test at the time of employment.
    The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:
    • Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
    • Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)
    • Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment
    • Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see job posting qualifications section for details).
  • Successful completion of all pre-employment requirements is mandatory to be eligible for employment. These requirements are in accordance with the San Bernardino Community College District's Administrative Procedures and Board Policies.
