Job Summary

The Police Sergeant, under direction, supervises officers and police personal and enforces, prevents, and investigates violations of the law and University rules and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervises assigned police officers and personnel. Evaluates, counsels and advises subordinates. Approves subordinate leave.

Examines and approves reports and case files submitted by subordinates.

May supervise a squad of security officers at special events.

May function as a police sergeant in any sergeant's position within the department.

Disseminates administrative directives and policies and ensures implementation.

Patrols campus and acts as a point of contact for other agencies.

Provides professional skills to in-service seminars and training of subordinate officers.

Investigates offenses and arrests offenders of State Criminal Law and Transportation Code violations.

Prepares comprehensive reports.

Manages crime scenes and evidence collection and processing.

Attends meetings with other departments on and off campus.

Performs administrative duties.

May serve as a member of committees, recruit officer review and officer promotion boards.

Testifies in Justice of the Peace Court as well as County and District Courts and student judicial hearings.

Interacts with the public by speaking on various topics dealing with law enforcement and community policing.

Minimum Requirements
Education- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience- Eight years of experience as a licensed Police Officer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population. Ability to function under adverse and stressful conditions.
Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses- Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) intermediate certification. Must have a State of Texas class 'C' vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Other Requirements
Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends. Applicant must successfully pass psychological evaluation, physical examination, and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history.
