In Student Leadership and Engagement, we facilitate purposeful involvement and leadership development that supports and enhances students’ academic experience. We engage students in meaningful and memorable involvement experiences that create a sense of belonging, and we equip them with the knowledge, tools, and experiences to practice socially responsible leadership and contribute to a global society. Student Leadership and Engagement, serving the entire student body, provides leadership and vision for coordinating various forms of student involvement and engagement within DASA at NC State University.

The department encompasses co-curricular leadership programs and initiatives; student organization management; education, and development; student governance; large scale campus programming; global engagement via Alternative Service Break, service and civic engagement coordination; leadership training and coaching; campus-community partnerships; three academic courses; and a robust student intern program.

Essential Job Duties

The Associate Director for Civic and Community Engagement will be responsible for establishing the strategic vision related to civic and community engagement initiatives for Student Leadership and Engagement and the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. The associate director will provide leadership for the implementation of projects, programs, and initiatives within Student Leadership and Engagement related to student’s basic needs, community and civic engagement, and service learning.

Strategic Planning
  • Conceive and lead strategic planning activities related to community and civic engagement and service learning within SLE, DASA, and NC State University.
  • In coordination with DASA Development and University Advancement, conceive and provide strategic visioning of development and fundraising opportunities that support civic and community engagement activities that support unit, division, and institutional goals including enhancement funds for Alternative Service Break trips/
  • Serve as NC State’s content expert and media contact on university civic engagement activities, and coordinate with University Communications and DASA Marketing and Communications team to represent NC State’s interests to the university community and public.
  • Establish NC State’s priorities related to voter and election engagement and coordinate with university leadership and departments to institutionalize best practices for voter engagement.
  • Serve as liaison and representative of the university to state, regional, and national organizations including North Carolina Campus Engagement.

Leadership
  • Provide visioning and supervision of the implementation of civic and community curricular and co-curricular goals including the Alternative Service Break program, Active Citizenry Series, service learning initiatives that advance DASA and university strategic goals.
  • Supervise Assistant Director responsible for ASB, Assistant Director for Student Government, graduate assistants for civic engagement, and student staff
  • Serve on the Student Leadership and Engagement leadership team
  • Charter student governance on campus and serve on the Student Government advising team
  • Establish goals and expectations for staff to provide exemplary services, programs, and initiatives based on current research in student learning, development theories, and best practices.
  • Manage and reconcile financial projects for civic and community engagement.
  • Assist with fundraising campaigns for civic and community engagement in partnership with Director and DASA Development
  • Lead ongoing assessment and evaluation processes of civic and community engagement activities that support DASA and NC State’s strategic plan.
  • Mobilize staff and content experts of civic and community engagement to prepare and develop programs, trainings, and initiatives
  • Develop and lead university and community coalitions, advisory groups, and taskforces, that promote civic and community engagement goals of the DASA and NC State Strategic plan.
  • Facilitate collaboration and the development of relationships and strategic partnerships across the campus, in the community, and within the profession.
  • Oversee all budget activities related to civic and community engagement activities including ASB trips
  • Advance the unit and division’s goal of promoting civic, community, and global engagement at NC State University.
  • Design programs and events that are welcoming and promote socially responsible leadership.

Other Responsibilities

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Education, Leadership, Organizational Development, Higher Education, or related field
  • 5 Years of Experience in Higher Education or related field

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with Civic and Community Engagement initiatives
  • Professional Staff Supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated effort to promote social justice among staff and students throughout the university
  • Effective leadership skills, with the ability to coach, advise, supervise, train and mentor
  • Demonstrated ability to start new initiatives
