About the Department

The largest among 10 departments in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, English offers a range of undergraduate majors and concentrations, minors, three masters programs (MA, MFA, and MSTC), as well as one joint PhD in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media (CRDM). We also offer many courses of interest to the University community as a whole, and we work with other units across campus — such as World Languages and Cultures, Africana Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Communication, and the College of Education — to furnish multidisciplinary opportunities for NC State students. Located in the Research Triangle Area in Raleigh, North Carolina, the English department consists of a large number of faculty, staff, and student body that prepares graduates for a variety of careers.

Essential Job Duties

The English Department at NC State University is seeking applicants for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Film and Media Studies. Area of specialization is open, although we are particularly interested in candidates specializing in the study of technologies, industries, media platforms (such as television or games), and/or infrastructures within the fields of Film and Media Studies. We also welcome applicants whose work speaks to the manner in which race, globalization, and/or coloniality impact the development, use, and history of media and its integration into our daily lives.

The new hire will play a key role in our nationally recognized PhD program in Communication, Rhetoric, & Digital Media (CRDM). They will teach required courses for both graduate and undergraduate students across these programs. Additionally, they will contribute to maintaining the programs’ national standing, attract and recruit MA and PhD applicants, direct MA capstones and PhD dissertations, serve on committees, and mentor graduate students at all levels.

Minimum Education and Experience

PhD in Film and Media Studies, or an equivalent degree in a related field

Other Required Qualifications

  • Have a recognized research and teaching profile in Film and Media Studies
  •  Possess teaching experience or demonstrate potential for success in the classroom
  •  Have experience or the ability to contribute to NC State’s reputation for Innovative Teaching, Scholarship, and Community Outreach

Preferred Qualifications

  • The candidate should have teaching experience at the university level and demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence.
