About the Position

The Associate Dean for Student Life serves as an advocate for an accessible, welcoming, and inclusive community for all students and helps lead efforts to provide a campus climate that advances student success, personal development, and collaborative student learning experiences.


The Associate Dean for Student Life helps to resolve student conflicts and recommend student life policies and conducts assessments and evaluations.
This position reports directly to the Vice President for Student Services. In a key leadership and management role, the Associate Dean for Student Life will employ practices that develop a strong sense of teamwork, equity, and investment in Highline College’s mission across all functional areas, while maintaining a culture of sustainable excellence, mentoring, and support for its staff.

This position is an exempt, at-will, full-time position.

 

Essential Tasks

 

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Services (VPSS), this position will:

Student Development
  • Serve as a strategic leader and subject matter expert in college student development to enhance outcomes that address the holistic student;
  • Bridge the curricular and co-curricular student experience by thoughtfully collaborating with people and initiatives that cultivate campus partnerships and synergy to provide a seamless student experience and assure that a variety of student life opportunities are offered to all students;

  • Provide organizational support, advocacy, and resources to the Highline Student Union, Associated Students of Highline College, and support the development and maintenance of student-driven clubs and organizations;

  • Generate a comprehensive S&A funded events and activities calendar for the campus community, with special emphasis on building student leaders and campus communities;

  • Provide ex-officio support to the Services and Activities Fee Fund Subcommittee of Associated Students of Highline College Student Government;

  • Regularly hold student office hours/drop-in hours.

Supervision
  • The Associate Dean for Student Life is responsible for the administrative and programmatic oversight of the Center for Cultural & Inclusive Excellence and the Center for Leadership and Service to ensure the values of learning, service, leadership and social justice are vibrant within the spectrum of department offerings;
  • Maintains an awareness and understanding of current labor and management concerns, regulations, and contractual agreements;
  • Provide staff development activities and coordinates professional development opportunities for staff and students (in-services, programs, training, events, teleconferences, etc.);
  • Provide skill development training for staff and students (program evaluation and assessment, developing learning outcomes, time management, strategic planning, etc.).
Administrative
  • The Associate Dean for Student Life is the primary budget authority for all 522-funded programs and delegates signature, projects budget needs, and assists with the allocation of resources as needed;
  • Prioritizes the fiscal management of S&A, including budget preparation, resource allocation, and partnership with the Highline College Budget Office;
  • Use surveys, benchmarking, data and assessments to set and inform diversity, equity, and inclusion goals related to matters of student access, progression, retention, and completion;
  • Contribute data and descriptive program information for Student Services reports and assessments;
  • Represent Student Life on the emergency response team;
  • Lead the planning and execution of Commencement ceremonies. Coordinate logistics, including venue selection, setup, and breakdown, in collaboration with relevant staff/faculty.
Student Services Division
  • Actively participates as a member of the Student Services Leadership Team and Student Services Administrative Cabinet in implementing division-wide strategic planning and initiatives;
  • Develops policies and practices that enhance the ability of Student Services to interact with all divisions to create a supportive campus community that promotes the well being of students and ensures that diversity and inclusion are advanced throughout;
  • Work directly and collaboratively with a team of Deans and Associate Deans;
  • Develop and implement the student complaint process and when necessary, escalate issues and concerns to the appropriate executive leader;
  • Contribute to the development of student learning outcomes and program assessment;
  • Coordinate training on student development theories and social justice frameworks for student staff.
Professional Development
  • Actively participate in online and in-person educational and professional activities, conferences, build knowledge, expand resources, stay current with compliance, rules, and policy, and will support the continuous learning of staff through;
  • Maintain active participation and engagement in relevant student affairs professional associations;
  • Partner with COCM to support training for housing staff, including Resident Advisors.
General
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and supervise full-time exempt employees;
  • Serve on department, division, and college committees, as needed or deemed appropriate by the Vice President for Student Services;
  • Participate in regional, state, and national professional organizations pertinent to the field(s);
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • A Master's degree or an advanced degree in Higher Education, Student Development/Affairs, or a related field; AND
  • Three years of experience supervising, leading, and managing departments within an organization.
