The Office of Research and Innovation supports the NC State community by identifying strategic research areas and specific funding sources, assisting in proposal development, providing professional development, encouraging partnerships, and providing administrative oversight and support services.

The Office of Research and Innovation facilitates an efficient and collaborative research and innovation environment by maximizing access to existing resources, identifying needs, coordinating activities to secure new resources, and promoting an interdisciplinary research culture.

The Office of Research and Innovation translates results by licensing IP, leveraging resources, launching start-up companies, communicating the value of our work, and fostering partnerships that lead to social, economic, and technological development.

This position will be housed within the Integrated Support Service Center (ISSC), which provides proposal, financial and administrative support for the Office of Research and Innovation’s centers and institutes, Core Research Facilities, and principal investigators across the university who are not affiliated with a college research office. Streamlining these services eliminates costly duplication and creates efficiencies.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of the Service Center Financial Analyst is to provide a broad range of financial support. This position serves as the primary point-of-contact for all financial transactions for University Core Facilities/ORI service centers and is a key contributor to the Integrated Support Service Center (ISSC). This position will work with Core Research Facility Directors and staff to manage day-to-day business operations within Core Research Facilities, including financial and administrative tasks.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Financial Support and Reporting:
    • Provide comprehensive financial support, including generating budget and usage reports.
    • Create and maintain monthly reports, and facilitate requisitions of equipment and supplies.
    • Assist with monthly financial reports and quarterly alignment activities across all funding sources for the Core Facilities.
  • Customer Service and Collaboration:
    • Display an exemplary and dedicated sense of positive customer service and a very high degree of availability and accessibility to Core Facilities Directors and staff as well as to internal and external clients. Work well with other ORI ISSC team members.
    • Listen and respond appropriately to clients, assisting in finding creative solutions to meet business needs and objectives using a positive can-do attitude and innovative thinking. Demonstrate flexibility and versatility in adapting to the overall needs of the operational unit.
  • Knowledge and Compliance:
    • Maintain knowledge of NC State, federal, and state accounting rules and standards for state funding, auxiliary sales and services/service centers, and communicate best practices to customers.
    • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Decision Support and Analysis:
    • Conduct periodic internal reviews of transactions and business processes to ensure accuracy and compliance.
    • Analyze and recommend on service center rates, administrative fees, and resource utilization to support strategic decision-making.
    • Assist in managing and forecasting financial activities related to various funding sources, including sponsored research, state appropriations, and F&A overhead funds, to support strategic initiatives and ensure financial sustainability.
    • Handle revenue sharing and multi-year financial projections, creating and maintaining comprehensive financial reports for Core Research Facilities to support long-term planning and resource allocation.
  • Transactional and Monitoring Tasks:
    • Assist with internal and external billing processes for customers of Core facilities/service centers, initiating billing and resolving complex issues.
    • Proactively monitor spending to ensure strategic utilization of resources.
    • Manage transactions and initiate analysis using the MENDIX platform.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist in the annual NC State inventory and asset management process.
  • Serve as the primary financial and business point-of-contact for Core Facilities, and as backup for other ISSC team members.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports and assist in creating service center 5-year business plans.
  • Collaborate closely with university departments and utilize available resources effectively.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Accounting, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

• High-level of knowledge of Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word and adaptability in utilizing desktop and web-based computing productivity and efficiency tools. Must possess an excellent aptitude for detailed numerical and data manipulation, work-sheet and documentation maintenance and production and operating in an organized paperless office environment where record-keeping work and communication with clients and colleagues is performed in an electronic and virtual environment.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills: Must provide case status reporting and follow-up with clients and colleagues on a regular basis without reminder.
• Detail oriented with a solid commitment to accuracy in all tasks
• Able to multi-task to meet critical deadlines and manage workflow in a timely manner. Must be able to self-monitor calendar deadlines, reminders and ticklers and ensure adequate lead-times are maintained.
• Ability to interpret financial guidelines, answers general inquiries and advise others regarding processes, services, and operations as applied to a broad range of varied and possibly unique situations
• Must be adaptable to ISSC operational best-practices.
