About the Department

Employee Career Development is a new unit within NC State University Human Resources whose primary function is to assist employees in navigating career growth and development, identifying and aligning skills, knowledge, and talents with job roles and responsibilities, and goal setting for longer-term career success.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of this role is to provide direct consultative services to NC State employees regarding their individual career development. As a Career Development Specialist, you will coach employees on aligning their interests and talents, identifying career development opportunities, and establishing career goals. Additionally, you will design and distribute educational materials to support employees in their career development activities. This position reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for HR Strategy and collaborates closely with the Employee Career Development (ECD) Program Coordinator.

Additionally, this position plays a crucial role in empowering employees to explore their career aspirations, thereby enhancing overall employee satisfaction and retention. By providing one-on-one consultations, group workshops, and career assessments, you will help employees identify their strengths and areas for growth, guiding them towards fulfilling career paths within the university and beyond. Your efforts will contribute to creating a supportive and dynamic work environment, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

As a Career Development Specialist, you will have the opportunity to deepen your expertise in career counseling and human resources. You will gain valuable experience in designing and delivering educational programs, evaluating program effectiveness, and developing strategies to meet client needs. Additionally, you will stay abreast of new employment trends, laws, and best practices, positioning yourself as a knowledgeable resource within the university. This role offers a pathway to advance within the HR field, with opportunities to take on greater responsibilities and contribute to strategic HR initiatives.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Effective interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication.
  • In-depth knowledge of counseling and career development theories and techniques; individual and group counseling techniques skills to assist individuals with career decision and development
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work with a variety of populations, understanding FERPA, HIPPA, and confidentiality requirements
  • Experience designing educational and marketing materials, and ability to deliver training to a variety of audiences concerns.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing guidance and advice to clients, with a record of successful client outcomes.
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining strong professional relationships with clients and program partners.
  • Successful implementation and maintenance of career development programs, as evidenced by measurable program success metrics.
  • Experience in setting and achieving specific, measurable objectives in a professional setting.
  • Proven ability to interpret and convey information related to policies, laws, and regulations in an easy-to-understand manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification from a professional organization such as the American Counseling Association, National Career Development Association, or National Board for Certified Counselors is preferred.
  • Ability to enroll and complete a 120-hour course on Facilitating Career Development within 9 months if the candidate does not possess other equivalent certifications or credentials.
  • Experience in a counseling position.
