STUDENT WORKER TUTOR

Job Description

Basic Functions

This is a continuous recruitment for an application pool to fill student workers. Please refer to the requirements section and ensure all requirements are met upon applying.

Tutoring and Academic Support is dedicated to providing students, faculty, and other student support services with tutoring, resources, and support needed for academic success. Tutoring support is provided in the Communication Center and ESL Lab, CalWorks, EOPS, Math Success Center, Writing Center, Athletics Center, ACCESS Resource Center, Veterans Resource Center, and in various other departments, centers, and classes across the District.

Tutoring and Academic Support may schedule an interview with the applicant based upon completion of the employment packet and verification that minimum qualifications have been met. The needs of Tutoring and Academic Support are another factor in determining prospective interviews. Turning in an application packet does not guarantee an interview. Eligible Math and English candidates will be asked to take a diagnostic exam prior to the oral interview.  

Student positions are not limited to 150 days but are subject to EC88003 requirements. Student workers may not work more than a total of 20 hours weekly, inclusive of all student and short-term hourly work.

Representative Duties

Tutor students in one-on-one and/or group settings. Facilitate planned group workshop sessions. May tutor specific populations such as students in ACCESS, EOPS, Veteran’s Resource Center, etc.  
 

Requirements

All applicants:

  • Completion of at least one semester of college course work and current student registered in at least six (6) to twelve (12) units depending on funding source
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Required Training: Completion of TUTR 30 course, tutor orientation, and ongoing training
  • Faculty recommendation on content knowledge and people skills.
  • Content competency evidenced by a grade of an "A" or "B" (see below) in subject(s) you wish to tutor:

Math tutor applicants: Completion of Math 105 or 120 with an "A" or "B"
English tutor applicants: Completion of English 101 with an "A" or "B"
Other tutor applicants: Completion of the relevant course with an "A" or "B"

Knowledge and Abilities

A complete file consists of all of the following:
1. Completed electronically signed Victor Valley College application
2.  Requested Work Schedule -  Click and the document will open in another tab (A copy must accompany application - please attach in the appropriate attachment page)
3. Letter of recommendation - Click and the document will open in another tab. You will need to have a letter filled out by Instructor(s) for each discipline. (A copy must accompany application - please attach in the appropriate attachment page)
4. Copies of unofficial college transcripts showing college coursework and GPA. (Copies of unofficial transcripts must accompany application - please attach in the appropriate attachment page)

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all requested materials are received. Once the department receives your completed application and supporting documents, they will evaluate your application for completeness and to ascertain that minimum qualifications have been met. An interview may be scheduled based on the subject area(s) tutored, qualifications met, and the needs of the tutoring center. If you are invited to an interview, please plan on spending 1 to 1.5 hours on a written and oral evaluation.
