Research Technologist
Job Description
We are seeking a Research Technologist.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Work in support of the tissue culture facilities, including ordering of supplies, preparation of media, and disposal of waste materials (solid and liquid).
- Perform tissue culture duties using aseptic techniques.
- Prepare solutions, growth factors and aliquots of factors for tissue culture and for in vitro differentiation.
- Work to maintain and perform quality control checks on human pluripotent stem cell lines. This will involve the preparation of well characterized frozen stocks of cells, as well as the cultivation of cells suitable for experimentation.
- Differentiate human pluripotent stem cell into cardiovascular cells according to standard operating procedures and protocols and perform quality control assessments.
- Assist in the transfection or nucleofection of human pluripotent stem cell lines, their derivatives and somatic cells.
- Perform RNA and DNA extractions/preparations suitable for subsequent analyses by members of the laboratory or core facilities.
- Prepare cells for immunostaining and flow cytometry under the supervision of senior researchers.
- Maintain paper and computerized research files.
- Organize and maintain collections of cell data cross referenced with experimental dates. Information regarding frozen stocks, cells for experiments, as well as experimental data must be maintained and made available to members of the laboratory.
- Adhere to protocol requirements to ensure validity of experimental research data. Maintain a good working knowledge of all assigned experimental protocols and data analysis techniques.
- Participate in weekly research group meetings. Meet regularly with designated laboratory staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols, and prioritize new experiments.
- Conduct literature searches.
- Refer to and comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.
- Adhere to all Health Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area.
- Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with basic biological techniques, including imaging and biochemistry.
- Working knowledge of research practices for cell biology.
- Experience with common computer programs such as Microsoft Office, with data analysis using MATLAB and Python, and with specialized packages for machine learning methods.
- Willingness to learn specialized software used in the research.
- Understanding of statistical concepts relevant for analysis of experimental data.
Physical Requirements
- May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus)
- Must be able to work both on the Homewood and Medical School campuses to assist with collaborative projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a research laboratory that works with cells and tissues and or has cellular and molecular biology experience.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($46,313 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

Schedule: M-F, limited work on weekends
