Research Specialist II

Job Description

The O’Brien Lab in the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine seeks a full-time Research Technician II. The candidate will support the lab with general day-to-day activities, including ordering, cell/tissue culture and maintenance, biochemistry, molecular biology, protein purification, and running established binding and activity assays. While this is a support position, the candidate will have training opportunities. The candidate will help develop and implement standard operating procedures and establish a collaborative learning environment within the lab. Our lab is a membrane protein biochemistry and biophysics lab focusing on G-protein-coupled receptor structural biology, dynamics, and drug discovery. The candidate will focus on supporting the lab’s work by expressing and purifying human GPCRs and should have prior lab experience, and be familiar with standard lab techniques, including:


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Aseptic Technique
  • Cell Culture (bacterial, insect, mammalian)
  • Biochemistry (Gels, western blot)
  • Protein Purification
  • Computer Literacy
  • Cloning (PCR)
  • Cell culture maintenance
  • Buffer and reagent preparation
  • Ordering
  • Lab maintenance and organization.
  • Maintenance, and duties (stocking, placing/receiving orders, lab stocks, setting up equipment), Collecting and analyzing data as needed.
  • Candidates should also have a passion for or desire to learn about uncovering biology/medicine through structural and biochemical techniques.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Cell culture (human, insect, bacterial) experience.
  • Basic biochemistry and assay development.

Starting Salary Range: $41,300 - $72,300 Annually ($65,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
