If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our Accounting team at APL.

 

We are seeking a self-motivated and technically savvy Senior Accountant who is well-versed in government regulations and accounting standards, is proficient at using large amounts of data to perform and present key financial reviews and recommendations, and can collaboratively perform on cross-functional teams. They will act as the benefits accounting lead and point of contact for APL’s third party billing vendor, perform various accounting and reconciliation functions and cost monitoring activities, and prepare and submit in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), cost accounting standards (CAS), and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR).

We are looking for someone with a focus on partnering, who is detail oriented with a continuous eye on improvement and excellent organizational, prioritization and interpersonal skills. Also important to success is maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced environment.

As a Senior Accountant…

  • Your primary responsibility will be to serve as the APL benefits accounting lead and conduct consistent in-depth data reviews for allowability, allocability, and compliance with government regulations and contract requirements. Your technical savviness, attention to detail, and story-telling mentality will come into play as you efficiently connect information across multiple data sources (financial and business), integrate sound business logic, and deliver reporting/visualizations to ensure effective monitoring and management of financial risk areas. Moreover, your interest in critical thinking and effective problem-solving skills will facilitate timely and applicable solutions that are advantageous in a fast-paced and transient environment.
  • We expect you to prepare small benefit plan balancing and other account reconciliations and investigate, analyze, and resolve reconciling differences, enabling effective cash management of business operations.
  • You will prepare internal and external 457 plan and health & welfare audit documentation addressing questions about cost allowability, accounting data flow, and accounting records data accuracy. Your inquisitive nature and investment in growth and development will be instrumental in offering ideas to improve information management activities affecting quality controls.
  • Using your inspiring interpersonal and communication skills, you will serve as a liaison between accounting, financial planning, APL business teams, and auditors that cultivates productive relationships and information sharing that is instrumental to the successful execution of APL’s financial operations and its missions.
  • You will perform other duties as assigned, including the review and posting of journal entries, month-end and year-end close activities, and supporting Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) audit requests.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration (with a concentration in Accounting)
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in general accounting
  • Strong competency and proficiency related to general accounting (financial statement presentation, general ledger closings and reporting, audit coordination, etc.) and GAAP, CAS, FAR standards/regulations
  • Exhibits a self-starter mentality, shows extraordinary initiative, and analyzes and resolves challenges independently and in a team-based setting
  • Has a talent for curating data and developing analytical deliverables
  • Demonstrate highly developed analytical and forecasting skills that integrates disparate data across multiple platforms
  • Resourceful with problem-solving at a conceptual level in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Shows outstanding attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Excellent at maintaining accuracy while multitasking, extracting data needs, prioritizing assignments, communicating progress, and meeting deadlines
  • Exhibits superior interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to form and sustain trusted relationships across all organizational levels and external partners
  • Has a strong desire to learn and can easily adapt to changing environments
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook -- sophisticated Excel knowledge expected

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Are a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or have a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in Accounting
  • Has experience in a DoD contracting environment
  • Understanding and sound knowledge of APL business systems including Oracle General Ledger, Oracle Projects, and Data Warehouse applications
  • Robust understanding of Indirect Cost Submission
  • Professional experience with multiple business fields
  • Sponsored program administration experience
  • Data Visualization experience with emphasis on Power BI

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. $54,700 Annually

Maximum Rate
