Network Analyst

Job Description

IT@JH Networking, Telecom and Data Ctr is seeking a Network Analyst responsible for network maintenance activities on the Mt. Washington campus, along with key enterprise devices that span multiple campuses. The Network Analyst will work heavily focused on the Mt. Washington campus network, and performing maintenance, software upgrades, and configuration of campus devices. In addition to campus work, this position is responsible for the maintenance, configuration, and troubleshooting of complex IT systems in the enterprise data centers as well as intercampus connectivity that impacts mission critical enterprise, academic, medical and research systems and application services. This position will work closely with network engineers to deliver and troubleshoot network services. This position requires advanced knowledge of the OSI model. This position requires basic knowledge of routing, with a desire to grow routing skills.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Thorough knowledge of layer 2 switching principles in a complex environment.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot VLANs, spanning tree, link aggregation and trunking technologies.
  • Perform troubleshooting of OSPF and BGP, in addition to switching and physical technologies.
  • Interface with customers to diagnose and troubleshoot technologies such as DNS and DHCP as it relates to network issues.
  • Working knowledge of desktops, laptops, hardware and software setup, configuration.
  • In depth knowledge of OSI model and how all components in an end-to-end network fit into the model.
  • Solid understanding of DHCP and DNS as well as a thorough knowledge of private and public IP addressing.
  • Will be lead on small projects and assist engineers in other projects.
  • Understanding of service excellence techniques and skills and the ability to interpret customer needs in a fast-paced environment.


Specific Devices, Software, Projects

  • Responsible for configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining a mix of Arista and Cisco devices.
  • Responsible for network management on the Mt. Washington campus, along with data centers, cloud, and inter-campus connectivity.
  • For smaller projects, this position should be able to lead the projects from start to finish. For medium and large projects, this position will be on a project team and duties will be assigned by network engineers.


Scale/size of Area, Project and/or System Supported

  • The enterprise data centers have over 20,000 active IP addresses across a geographically disperse network. The enterprise network has grown to over 300,000 active ip addresses which the network engineer is responsible for the core connectivity allowing all campuses to connect within the enterprise intranet and internet routing domains.


Work Location

  • The position is hybrid, but the primary location is Mt. Washington. Analyst is expected to go on site if troubleshooting or planned work requires it. Travel may be required to support sites across the MD/DC/VA region and St. Petersburg FL.


On-call Requirements

  • Expected to troubleshoot and repair any part of the network infrastructure that is geographically distributed throughout Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC. Due to the locations, the position requires transportation and a flexible work schedule. The position will participate in an on-call rotation with other team members to provide 24x7x365 support coverage.


Physical Requirements

  • The ability to lift 50Lbs. to support equipment installs.

  • Ability to articulate and explain the fundamental differences between layer 2 and layer 3 functionality.
  • Moderate to strong understanding of routed versus routing protocols.
  • Strong understand of VLANs and demonstrated ability to configure and validate.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot simple IPv4 routing issues for routers located at remote facilities (small edge routers).
  • Basic knowledge of IPv6 and 128-bit numbers and QOS.
  • May configure and maintain network related systems that run Windows, Linux, or UNIX as an operating system.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $53,800 - $94,400 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
