Director, Physics and Biology in Medicine Graduate Program at UCLA
Job Description
Director, Physics and Biology in Medicine Graduate Program at UCLA
The Physics and Biology in Medicine (PBM) Graduate Program at UCLA (http://www.pbm.ucla.edu/) is seeking applications for its next program director.
The PBM Graduate Program is an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental graduate program (IDP) in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. It is among the top medical physics graduate training programs in the nation and has been funded by the NIH through training grants for over 45 years, with the current T32 training grant funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). Faculty and students in the program conduct research in Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy, Molecular Imaging and Theranostics, and Radiation Biology.
The PBM Graduate Program is supported by the Departments of Radiological Sciences, Molecular & Medical Pharmacology (& Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging) and Radiation Oncology and is accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP; www.campep.org). The PBM program serves as one of 12 Home Areas within the Graduate Programs in Biosciences (GPB), a consortium of graduate programs in the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) and the Life Sciences Division of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Graduate Program Director, with guidance from a Faculty Graduate Advisor and administrative support from a Student Affairs Officer, oversees all aspects of the graduate program including recruitment, admissions, curriculum, monitoring of student progress, special events (including social events), and financial management. The Director convenes and oversees semi-annual faculty meetings and other activities (Candidates’ weekend, Welcome events, etc.). The Director oversees program evaluation activities including the Academic Senate 8-Year Review and the external CAMPEP accreditation activities, in addition to overseeing all aspects of the NIBIB T32 training grant including selection of candidates for participation, submission of progress reports and communication with the NIBIB, and submission of renewals. The program director also serves as the Home Area Director for the PBM Home Area within GPB, working to coordinate PBM’s activities with other graduate programs. As a faculty member of the PBM program, the candidate is also expected to participate in the educational program by teaching and actively mentoring PBM graduate students.
The successful candidate must possess a PhD or other doctoral degree in medical physics or a closely related discipline and be eligible for a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor at UCLA. In addition, applicants must have at least five years of full-time postgraduate experience in medical physics, as well as an established research and funding track record that fits with the missions of one or more of the sponsoring departments, and must be a principal investigator who oversees an independent research program supported by extramural funding and who hosts graduate student trainees. Applicants with significant educational leadership experience, such as being a Program Director of a T32 training grant, Vice Chair of Education, Director of a graduate program, or similar, will be preferred. The faculty appointment will be in the best-suited sponsoring department and secondary appointments are possible.
