Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The G3 advisor positions work closely with potential and currently enrolled students to identify career pathways in academic programs that match their interests and skills. The advisor serves as a resource to assist individuals in overcoming non-academic barriers that may affect their ability to complete their educational goals successfully. Advisors will work with a student population that reflects the diversity of the of Virginia, with more than 40 percent of current students coming from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities for this role.

The advisor is proactive and designed to assist the student to the completion of a credential or degree. This includes communicating regularly with students, maintaining records of student outreach and other interactions, making connections to available college and community support services, and assisting with academic interventions when necessary. Advisors will utilize a variety of technology solutions in addition in-person interactions to connect with students. The ability to utilize and learn new technology and the willingness to work in different environments is essential. The successful candidate must be caring, organized, communicative, and flexible. The Advisor's primary role will be onboarding and supporting students in G3 (Get Skilled, Get a Job, Give Back) credit programs. Additionally, they will serve as Retention Advisors to vulnerable populations.

These are restricted funded positions.
 
 
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Work experience in a higher education setting or in counseling or academic coaching/advising.
  • Knowledge of barriers to educational success and a desire to help others reach their educational goals
  • Experience working with racially, ethnically, economically and age diverse individuals
  • Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support to, and motivate students
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to effectively follow up and follow through
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficient in use of technology, including Microsoft Office and Google docs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently as well as part of a team
  • Desire to learn and grow as professional needs arise
  • Knowledge of available financial aid and scholarship information
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Navigate and other educational technologies
