Critical Infrastructure Protection Staff – AI/ML Decision Science

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Do you love to push the bounds of applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in safety critical applications?

Are you passionate about researching the hardest cyber security problems and collaborating with outstanding reverse engineers to build proof-of-concept capabilities??

Do you like contributing to research in decision making under uncertainty?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking an AI/ML Decision Science Research Engineer to help us create game-changing capabilities that enable U.S. infrastructure to be robust in the face of complex threats and determined adversaries. As a member of our team, you'll contribute to the implementation of cyber-physical systems (CPS) that incorporate AI/ML algorithms to assist in, and automate, critical decision making. You will be joining a hardworking team of engineers and scientists who design, build, hack, destroy, and invent capabilities to advance the state of the art in industrial control system (ICS) resilience. We are passionate about continuously deploying our work into operational facilities to truly support our sponsors’ missions. Our team is committed to protecting U.S. citizens daily, as they fly in our national airspace and rely on the availability and safe delivery of resources such as energy and water, as well as develop proof-of-concept offensive cyber capabilities with a focus on industrial systems.

As an AI/ML decision science research engineer...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to advance the state-of-the-art in decision making under uncertainty by applying AI/ML in life critical domains.
  • You will help define the research direction by innovating at the intersection of CPS and AI/ML, by defining intermediate milestones to achieve long-term ambitious goals.
  • You will work closely with researchers to test, deploy, maintain, and enhance software integrated with cyber-physical system testbeds and develop demonstrations.
  • You will develop and present proposals, briefings, and reports to technical specialists, collaborators, and sponsors to influence important decisions.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a Bachelors in computer science, electrical engineering, AI/ML, data science, applied mathematics, statistics, or another technical field.
  • Have 8+ years of experience working with models and simulations to support decision making under uncertainty, and designing, debugging, and validating ML algorithms.
  • Are skilled in prototype implementations based on research publications and are familiar with the literature.
  • Have hands-on experience with deep learning tools such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras.
  • Are proficient in software engineering and developing and debugging in Python, MATLAB, Java, C/C++, C#, Rust, or Julia.
  • Have experience leading teams of researchers or engineers
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have multiple published first-author papers at top-tier ML/AI conferences/journals.
  • Are experienced with writing government or corporate grant proposals.
