DESCRIPTION

UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is growing in the diverse areas of professional educational programs, cutting-edge research, and pharmacy services. Research areas specific to this position posting are related to medication safety in the ambulatory care setting, practice-based research, collaborative practice, and a pharmacogenomics education program. Under the supervision of Dr. Pieter Dorrestein, incumbent will make contributions to experimental design and/or recommended changes to current experimental protocols in the field of the molecular understanding of the roles of microbes and the microbiome with applications in agriculture, human health, therapeutic discovery, forensics, and much more. Participate in writing papers, manuscripts, journal articles and proposals for research. Maintain Mass spectrometers and LC instruments and coordinate metabolic profiling for bacteria collection. Analyze and interpret experimental results refining experimental design as necessary. Provide work direction and act as a resource to new undergrads, visiting scientists, graduate students, post-docs and staff members. Work directly with industrial collaborators and be able to formulate a web presence for specific projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of biology, chemistry, molecular biology, and biochemistry attained through a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with mass spectrometry and LC instruments.

  • Demonstrated proven experience with bacterial research: Optimizing culturing procedures for high-throughput and efficiency; extraction (Optimization of extracting procedures, extracting solvent comparisons), etc.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office programs, including filemaker, word processing, spreadsheet, and graphics software; willingness and ability to update and increase Mac/PC skills and knowledge as needed. Demonstrated knowledge to create websites with the ability to update and increase knowledge.

  • Demonstrated successful, positive interpersonal oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Skill to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationalities.

  • Ability to analyze results of research productivity and to recommend and design methods for improving research productivity and quality.

  • Ability to follow established lab protocols and lab procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience operating lab equipment such as spectrophotometer, centrifuges, and other standard laboratory equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and to organize a varied workload to meet deadlines despite frequent interruptions. Demonstrated excellent organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, follow written and oral protocols.

  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program; safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, and use of protective items such as gloves and goggles.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,301 - $97,008 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $46.46

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
