Summary of Position

The community engaged internship program coordinator oversees summer internship programs jointly administered by UNH Cooperative Extension and New Hampshire Sea Grant (NHSG) to build experiential learning opportunities for UNH students. Under the general supervision of Extension’s project manager for strategic initiatives and with input from NHSG, the coordinator will form relationships with Extension and NHSG staff, community non-profit organizations, municipalities, and state agencies to develop undergraduate internships that address issues and priorities of communities while providing students with valuable career skills and work experience to enhance workforce preparedness. Internships include career readiness training and an end-of-summer showcase overseen by the coordinator.
In managing and leading the internships from recruitment and development through the annual showcase, Extension’s highly organized and detail-oriented internship program coordinator will build and maintain networks and relationships across campus and throughout the state to establish internship opportunities; recruit, hire and onboard student interns; provide support, training and guidance to intern mentors; stay up to date on best practices for developing career readiness; incorporate career skills curricula based on proven best practices; create marketing materials; manage the program budget; and problem-solve as needed. The coordinator will also collaborate with UNH Advancement to grow funding for internships.
The community engaged internship program coordinator will be an employee of UNH Extension and will have a dotted line to NHSG leadership and participate in relevant NHSG staff meetings.

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and two years’ experience in career services, career counseling, student services, human resources, program coordination or similar
  • Demonstrated success in planning, organizing and managing programs, and evaluating program effectiveness
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize competing priorities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, allowing effective work with diverse students, faculty, staff and external partners
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Willingness and ability to adapt to change and learn new skills
  • Knowledge of college student development
  • Strong computer literacy skills, including demonstrated facility with the full suite of Microsoft Office applications

Duty/Responsibility

Internship/Fellowship coordination
  • Using evaluation data and industry best practices, strategically develop and implement a comprehensive internship program that includes career readiness competency development
  • Conduct request for proposals to determine which internships and fellowships to fund
  • Coordinate and manage the internship application and selection process to ensure a beneficial experience
  • Facilitate communication between interns, mentors and other stakeholders, acting as the primary point of contact
  • Manage any issues or concerns that arise during the internships
  • Post internships, manage internship placements, track student progress, and generate necessary reports
  • Collaborate with supervisors and mentors to evaluate intern performance
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations related to internships
  • Ensure involvement of underserved and underrepresented audiences and that all programming is designed and conducted in full accordance with civil rights, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Affirmative Action (AA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) policies and procedures.

Duty/Responsibility

Recruitment and marketing
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with staff and non-profits to maintain and expand internship opportunities, networking throughout the state to build a portfolio of internship opportunities
  • Recruit potential interns by promoting opportunities through classroom, tabling, internship fairs and other presentations and events
  • Make presentations on and off campus on the value of high impact experiences to student learning
  • Coordinate with Extension and Sea Grant staff to understand their internship requirements
  • Create marketing materials and develop and post internship opportunities on relevant platforms
  • In conjunction with Extension’s associate director of development, develop fundraising plans and support the associate director of development by providing data and compelling narratives.

Duty/Responsibility

Student development
  • Work with UNH’s Career and Professional Success team to ensure prospective interns have the necessary resume writing and interview skills
  • Provide guidance to placed interns on professional behavior, expectations, and career development
  • Organize pre-internship orientation for students that includes reviewing policies and procedures and teaching career readiness competencies
  • Track and assess intern performance, providing them with constructive feedback and guidance throughout their internship experience
  • Create a nurturing environment and provide ongoing support to students through the internship process and provide direction to ensure they maximize their learning experiences.
  • Organize and lead workshops and events for interns, such as networking events and skill-building sessions
  • Mentor students for showcase poster creation and accompanying presentations
