Position Overview
The Department of History and Philosophy at Rider University seeks applications for a tenure track position as Assistant Professor in the history of Africa, including the African diaspora. The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in their specialized fields, a world history survey, and an introductory African-American history course on a 3-3 teaching load.
The Rider University community is composed of faculty, staff and students from a wide range of culturally diverse backgrounds. Applicants should be experienced with, and committed to work in and with, such a diverse population. Rider is a private, coeducational university located near Princeton, NJ, and within easy driving distance or train ride to New York City and Philadelphia. Applicants will be required to submit:- A Curriculum Vitae
- A statement detailing your commitment to serving a diverse population with supporting evidence.
- A cover letter of no more than three pages preferred. We ask all candidates to address the following in their cover letter:
- Specific interest in joining the faculty at Rider University. Why Rider?
- Approaches to and/or experience teaching & advising undergraduate students, including active and innovative teaching strategies as applicable.
- Range of courses that could be taught that would augment our curriculum.
- Scholarly contributions and research; highlight professional engagement in the field and any community engagement in local and/or global contexts.
Those candidates invited to participate in first round interviews, held via Zoom, will be asked to provide:- A writing sample (e.g. article or book/dissertation chapter)
- Sample syllabi
- Assignments for two proposed courses
Review of completed applications will begin on November 30.Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Ph.D. in History/Africana/African-American Studies required at time of appointment.
- Evidence of successful undergraduate history teaching experience.
- Ability to offer a range of courses to augment our curriculum geographically, thematically, and/or chronologically, along with world history surveys and introductory African-American history.
- Evidence of scholarly contributions and research.
- Satisfactory background and/or DMV checks required
