WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Under general guidance, provide specialized knowledge to support the effective implementation of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. Demonstrate expertise in nutrition education delivery to high-risk participants. Provide expert interpretation of program policies and promotion of services to the community. Perform and oversee program's WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) certification requirements. Mentor and train both new and existing counselors to support the Program's service quality standards and objectives. May monitor and advise staff office at various WIC site. Provide support, development, and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers.
Perform all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the Fundamental Principles and in compliance with standard operating procedures and other applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.
WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD
1.Utilize specialized knowledge in support of the agency's Nutrition Services Plan. Implement the nutrition and health education curricula's components to participants individually and in groups. Provide nutrition education- in-person, by phone and virtually. Coordinate individual and group nutrition education encounters consistent with participant's category, language, nutrition intervention level and status in the program. Document all pertinent information in the WIC Web Information System Exchange (WISE).
2. Advise in the accurate interpretation of WIC program service policies and procedures both formally and informally. Determine participants qualification status. Audit and evaluate services provided for effectiveness as needed. Perform and oversee program's WNA certification requirements for program staff.
3. Act as the program's office professional point of contact for a participant requesting a Registered Dietitian or needing high-risk services. Prescribe supplemental foods and process therapeutic formula requests. Determine the medical/nutritional risk of applicants/participants by evaluating anthropometric, biochemical and other health-related data. Provide counsel on nutritional and health-related problems, observing sound nutritional practices and participant confidentiality. Identify and report cases of child abuse/neglect to authorities.
4. Provide the counseling to support the Medical Nutrition Therapy provided by the participant's health care provider, especially if this has been requested. Refer participants with conditions of nutrition need to a provider for medical nutrition therapy. Communicate with participant's health care provider as needed for continuation of quality service.
5.Communicate with healthcare organizations to facilitate access to health care. Promote WIC services and share resource information with the community. Contribute to agency's caseload, breastfeeding promotion, and other department goals. Participate in outreach activities as needed; conducts presentations to health care community. service.
6.Mentor and train both new and existing counselors to support the program's service quality standards and improvement objectives. Ensure all operational requirements prescribed by the American Red Cross and CDPH WIC Branch are met. On occasion, may support people managers by leading the operation when and where managers are unavailable.
7. Ensure adequate safeguards for the protection and security of WIC property and WIC cards while in transit and at satellite offices. Trouble-shoot WIC WISE equipment and contact appropriate personnel if problems persist.
Scope
Work performed within a specialized discipline typically requiring a medical/scientific certification or licensure. Work independently to interpret findings, provide consultation and resolve problems.
Pay Information: The pay range for this position is (CA): $24.38/hr. - $26.01/hr.
Note that American Red Cross salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
Education: Master's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or other Nutrition related field from an accredited dietetics program required. Dietitians currently eligible to take the Registered Dietician (RD) exam by the Commission on Dietetic Registration required. Registered Dietitian (RD) preferred. Certified lactation professional, preferred.
Experience: Minimum 1 year of internship experience with 1,000 hours of supervised practice in dietetics and nutrition. Public health nutrition counseling, mentoring or supervisory experience preferred.
Management Experience:
* Combination of candidate's education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description's minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).
Skills & Abilities: Current knowledge of public health nutrition and maternal and child health concepts.
Able to mentor coworkers to develop excellent counseling skills. Excellent verbal/written communication skills required. Able to create a professional videoconferencing presence and to communicate clearly in-person and by phone. Intermediate level proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to work with a multi-cultural staff and participant population.
Travel: May require some travel.A current, valid driver's license with good driving record is required

Physical Requirements
Physical requirements are those present in normal office environment conditions. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs. Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software, and office equipment for sustained periods of time. May include sitting for long periods of time, driving a vehicle, and working under challenging conditions.
