Integrative Science Initiative

About the Department

The Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs, a unit within the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, provides leadership, direction, and oversight for universitywide interdisciplinary programs and initiatives. Building on successful efforts from NC State’s 2011-2020 strategic plan, the office brings together key Provost’s Office units that cross disciplinary boundaries and fosters partnerships with various programs. It oversees initiatives such as the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, Biotechnology Program, Climate Solutions Collaborative, Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Initiative, NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Integrative Sciences Initiative and Woodson Hall, the Shelton Leadership Center, and the Sustainable Futures Initiative. Aligned with NC State’s 2021-2030 Strategic Plan, Wolfpack 2030: Powering the Extraordinary, the office advances the university’s mission of excellence in teaching, research, and engagement.

Integrative Sciences Initiative
The Integrative Sciences Initiative’s (ISI) mission is to serve as a dynamic epicenter for interdisciplinary research, particularly in molecular biomimicry, metabolic processes in health and disease, and accelerated technologies. The initiative will be based within Woodson Hall, a new $180 million building on NC State’s North campus. Our commitment lies in furnishing our researchers with unparalleled access to state-of-the-art facilities and leading-edge expertise, thereby advancing scientific inquiry and fortifying the bridge between discovery and practical application.

The heart of ISI is to foster a transformative educational experience for all students. By launching an inventive undergraduate curriculum, we aim to enrich STEM educational opportunities with a biological perspective on chemistry, fostering a spirit of inspired inquiry and collaborative team science. By expanding students’ vision of what science can accomplish, this new curriculum will attract and inspire new students who bring a wide range of interests and who will ultimately become leaders in interdisciplinary research. The humanities, social sciences and the arts will be infused throughout the initiative.

ISI is more than an academic community; it’s a nexus that connects NC State to North Carolina and the broader world. By hosting special events and putting “science on display” at Woodson Hall, we invite the public to partake in our mission, promoting science as a shared human endeavor and encouraging collective participation in the journey of discovery.
