Job Description

The Center for Justice and Liberation advocates and serves as a comprehensive collaborative multicultural community space that honors and centers the holistic development and retention of underrepresented, marginalized, and stigmatized students due to oppressive structures. The center’s work is focused in the areas of social justice, liberation, academic enrichment, advocacy and resources.

 

The office oversees all identity-based student groups, clubs and organizations, providing guidance and administration of policies and protocol. The director provides leadership regarding the use of university funds and resources to produce efficient efforts at building and producing an engaged student body. The ideal candidate will be a committed professional with knowledge about race, racial identity, students across and outside the gender and sexual orientation spectrum, intersectionality, and possess a commitment to the holistic development of diverse student populations.

  1. Responsible for budget preparation, budget contract, and other matters related to the procurement of events, programs and services
  2. Provide direction and supervision to the professional, faculty fellow, graduate assistants and support staff
  3. Oversees the selection of professional staff, evaluate department personnel, and makes recommendations for appointment and other personnel actions
  4. Trains and evaluates professional and paraprofessional staff
  5. Oversee the planning and coordination of student focused campus-wide diversity programming and large-scale events in collaboration with staff, faculty, students and administrators
  6. Creates and conducts assessment activities based on learning outcomes to evaluate programs and services
  7. Available for response to crisis and emergency on an on-going basis and serve on the BIAS response team
  8. In collaboration with community standards, enforce university policies with campus organizations
  9. Provide general support, development and advisement to identity-based student organizations including trainings for student leaders and organization advisors
  10. Oversee identity-based student organization travel policies and procedures as it relates to conferences, overnight and day trips
  11. Assist with the administration of contracts for all performer, exhibition, and service vendors
  12. Work with campus partners to orchestrate a comprehensive support plan for diverse students including; students of color, students across and outside the gender and sexual orientation spectrum, and students of additional marginalized identities
  13. Collaborate with the Office of Inclusive Excellence to proactively address and respond to university-wide issues of diversity and social justice that affect students
  14. Inform, develop, lead and implement the programmatic, educational and leadership development opportunities on issues of diversity for our student community
  15. Establish positive relationships and outreach to students of color on campus. Support student organizations such as Latin American Student Organization, Black Student Union and The Alliance
  16. In collaboration develop, initiate, and produce annual week-long programs and heritage month collaboratives including Martin Luther King Jr. Week, convocation, leadership receptions, including theme months (BHM, LHM, APIDA),
  17. Cultivate a culture of leadership growth and development of students from orientation to graduation.
  18. Support the expansion of multicultural understanding on campus through sponsored forums, presentations, and activities
  19. Serve as the primary consultant to university departments as liaison for identity-based student groups and departments on management policies and operating practices
  20. Collaborate with department staff to produce events and programs that increase student engagement
  21. Execute programs and services that advocate for and address the needs of other special populations including commuters and off-campus students
  22. Partners with Campus Life and Recreation in the administration and ongoing evaluation of a student event approval and room reservation process for identity-based student organizations
  23. Provides staffing, management, scheduling and programming for the Center for Justice and Liberation
  24. Assist with major Student Life and university large-scale events such as Orientation, Move-In and Commencement

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, student development, counseling or related field of study
  • A minimum of five years of experience developing leadership experiences and advising multicultural, and/or student clubs and organizations and student-led initiatives
  • Demonstrated effective experience working with diversity, facilitating social justice and diversity focused programs

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing campus wide initiatives to support work in the area of equity and justice
  • Familiarity with and evidence of applying successfully for grants related to their work

 

Working Conditions:

This is a hybrid position with on-campus, in-person responsibilities in Salem, MA, which may require occasional work on evenings and weekends.

 

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.
