Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology (CATT) Laboratory is the industry leader for transportation information analysis, visualization, and user interface design. We provide cutting-edge analytics products and an integrated suite of situational awareness tools for transportation practitioners. These products and services are rapidly changing the way governments operate and make decisions.

We receive hundreds of gigabytes of transportation data daily, making our petabytes of archived data likely the largest collection of traffic data in the world. Our clients use our software to monitor real-time operations and analyze that data to generate valuable insights. Our work saves taxpayer money, improves the environment, and saves lives!

When you join our research team as a Specialty Research Network Administrator, you will work with a team of network and infrastructure researchers to architect innovative approaches for network topology design and implementation. Duties include evaluation of network requirements and systems, and development of innovative network designs and concepts that maximize thruput, improve reliability, and maintain secure communications supporting specialty research initiatives at the CATT Lab.

Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Perform innovative network topology design and implementation research.
  • Develop networking and data security plans in support of research grant requirements.
  • Operate and maintain existing networks across multiple on-premises data centers and development environments (200+ physical servers across 20+ racks of hardware) supporting specialty research.
  • Install, configure, and manage various network devices including servers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Design and implement networking solutions to improve performance in a 24/7 production environment with minimal downtime.
  • Provide network troubleshooting and technical support to the Lab staff.
  • Develop and maintain documentation including network requirements, designs, configurations, and diagrams.
  • Evaluate and update network configurations to minimize security vulnerabilities in collaboration with Cybersecurity staff.
  • Take initiative to find and implement improvements in the network infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or equivalent work experience.

Experience:
  • At least 3 years of experience supporting a large-scale development and/or production environment.
  • Experience with cable standards, current network technologies, network topology and design principles.
  • Experience with Cisco firewalls.
  • Experience with Cisco and Dell network switches.
  • Experience with network diagramming tools such as Visio or Draw.io.
  • Experience with VMWare, Hyper-V, or VirtualBox.
  • Experience with configuration and management of NAT, Access Rules, VLANs, IPSec tunnels, remote access VPN, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Strong communication skills

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Experience with Palo Alto Firewalls.
  • Experience with Linux (RHEL or CentOS).
  • Experience updating network infrastructure with minimum downtime to the production systems.
  • CCNA or CCNP certification.
  • Experience with NMS (network management systems) and SNMP protocol.
  • Knowledge of redundant network architecture, including protocols such as VRRP or HSRP.
  • 2–3 years of experience in any of the above.

Additional Information:

Salary range: $85,000 – $130,000.

Physical Demands

Predominantly operates in an office environment though significant periods of time will be spent in computer room and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting.
