Instructional Designer

Job Description

Salem State University is seeking two Instructional Designers to support excellence in teaching and faculty development. The instructional designers work closely with each other and other staff of the Center for Teaching Innovation to support the professional development of faculty, develop programming in collaboration with other departments, and aid in the design and development of courses in various modalities. Instructional designers work both independently and as part of a team. They also have some operational and administrative responsibilities in relation to program and project management, including scheduling workshops and other programming, publishing the weekly CTI newsletter, developing new resources, and maintaining the CTI main website.

Please Note: There are two vacancies for this position.

  1. Assist faculty in the development of course materials for delivery of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses
  2. Identify and communicate best practices for implementing instructional technologies into curriculum design
  3. Support creation of engaging learning activities and compelling course content
  4. Collaborate, assist, develop, and participate in the facilitation of professional development workshops and events, particularly with regard to course design, online teaching, inclusive pedagogy and technology-enhanced instruction
  5. Assist faculty with the conversion of face-to-face courses to hybrid and online formats
  6. Manage, facilitate, and participate in course development projects, as well as the development of instructional materials.
  7. Lead groups of faculty in professional learning e.g. Faculty Learning Communities, Summer Course Redesign efforts, New Faculty Onboarding
  8. Assist faculty in creating modes of assessment appropriate to course goals and content
  9. Research, write, and produce clear documentation and other instructional materials (websites, multimedia, and online tutorials) to support faculty learning
  10. Work with departments to create Canvas templates, and assist in their use and assessment
  11. Serve on University working groups, task forces, and committees
  12. Participate in planning for current and future college learning needs; provide organizational support as needed
  13. Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated experience building courses with Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Demonstrated experience with instructional design principles, instructional technology, or digital pedagogy
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in online learning and the use of Canvas templates OR demonstrated experience and expertise in the areas of inclusive pedagogy and assessment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or certificate in instructional design
  • Experience teaching at the college/university level
  • Experience teaching online
  • Experience providing professional development support for instructional technology, online teaching, or digital pedagogy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices of teaching and learning, instructional design practices, assessment, and universal design for learning and accessibility standards
  • Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders across units (IT, Library, Academic Affairs) and ranks (staff, administrators, faculty)
  • Ability to adapt to changing demands and instructional needs
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, verbal, and written skills
  • Strong attention to detail

Working Conditions:

This is an on-site, in-person position in Salem, MA with on-campus, in-person responsibilities which may require occasional work on evenings and weekends.

 

Office activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and interaction with computer equipment; occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 5-10 pounds.
