Job Description

Hopkins Athletics is a multidivisional department with 22 programs competing at the NCAA DIII level and two programs (men’s and women’s lacrosse) competing at the NCAA Division I level (BIG 10 Conference). The department also hosts a variety of robust recreational activities such as club sports, intramurals, and fitness programming.


The Hopkins Athletics Department seeks an innovative and forward-thinking Associate Athletic Director, Student-Athlete Leadership & Performance. The Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Leadership & Performance works to support the mission and integrity of Johns Hopkins University and the Athletics Department. Demonstrating adherence to the department philosophy, facility and staff schedule, equipment and facility maintenance expectations, and communication responsibilities is essential. The strongest candidates will have a demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment and a strong history of building and sustaining relationships with staff, student-athletes, and coaches., The individual works to develop and formulate future plans to reach institutional and departmental goals, to lead initiatives and to create an excellent experience for our students through their participation in athletics. Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs/Director of Athletics & Recreation, the position directly oversees student-athlete programming, student-athlete organizations (to include the student-Athlete Advisory Committee), the Department of Sports Performance and wellness (sports medicine, sports performance), and multiple sports programs. In addition, this individual has dotted line supervision of the Assistant Director for Student-Athlete Mental Health and Performance and should leverage athletics to build community both on campus and in the local Baltimore area. The individual may also serve as a member of the game operations staff on occasion and may additionally serve as the department Senior Woman Administrator (SWA).


Specific Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Oversees all student-athlete development initiatives as well as the student-athlete development team.
  • Tasked with delivering a robust, holistic development program to include (but not limited to) NCAA required trainings, leader development, health/wellness, career preparation, and other areas of strategic priority.
  • Responsible for the organization of all programs, as well as the assessment thereof.
  • Routinely communicates with student-athletes and staff about planned events and opportunities.
  • Participates in the facilitation and planning of Blue Jays LEAD programming.
  • Oversees and provides support to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and manages department Student-Athlete Development initiatives.
  • Provides supervision and oversight of the department of sport performance and wellness, to include sports medicine services and sport performance. Directly supervises the Assistant AD for Sport Performance and Wellness and provides dotted line supervision to the Assistant Director for Student-Athlete Mental Health and Performance.
  • Leads the effort to leverage athletics as a tool for community building and stakeholder engagement.
  • Builds relationships with on-campus constituents, takes an innovative approach to design/create community-focused events, and creates/oversees several community-building events throughout the academic year.
  • Oversees all community service projects within the department and continues to advance how departmental staff and student-athletes can serve the local Baltimore area.
  • Sport Administrator responsibilities (multiple varsity sport programs), including oversight of sport(s) and direct supervision of coach(es). May travel with teams to select competitions and all championships.
  • The position requires extensive and proactive interaction with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members.
  • Serves as department POC to Student Affairs for all required student training not specific to athletics.
  • Serves as a member of the department's Game Operations team
  • May be called upon to serve on campus-wide committees and/or working groups as needed.
  • May help to facilitate the annual student-athlete & family orientation sessions.
  • May serve as the department representative to Student Affairs for first-year orientation.
  • May serve as the department's Senior Woman Administrator (SWA).
  • May serve as the JHU staff representative to the Centennial Conference Snell-Shillingford Symposium.
  • Other responsibilities and special projects as assigned.


Key Relationships

  • The Associate Athletic Director, Student-Athlete Leadership & Performance is directly supervised by the Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs/Director of Athletics & Recreation.


Physical Requirements

  • General office, athletic facility, and campus environment.
  • Must be able to work additional hours during athletic events, including nights and weekends.
  • Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 50 pounds in coaching and training situations may be required.
  • Computer usage involving repetitive and/wrist motion is required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Five years of related work experience in a collegiate athletics environment.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Athletic administration experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with others.
  • Knowledge of basic software packages.
  • Understanding of athletics administration in a university environment.
