The YMCA of Steuben County, with a 25 year legacy for improving our community and the lives of our neighbors, has evolved into a premier human service organization for all. Today, the Y is one of the region’s most relevant charitable institutions and has demonstrated consistency, a distinct ability to respond to complex community issues, deliver quality programming and model social responsibility. Named the 2018 and 2024 Non Profit of the Year, we strive to address the changing needs of our community to deliver a menu to services that are accessible to all. Led by dedicated, passionate volunteers and a talented professional staff, our Y serves over 5,400 members across 3 states and several counties. YMCA dynamic programs range from summer day camps to inspiring wellness programs for all ages and abilities. There are initiatives in place designed to help young people reach their potential, and countless other programs that individuals rely on the Y to live a healthful life. The Y’s spirit of collaboration engages members, volunteers, donors, staff, and community partners in delivering our cause throughout our community!
Minimum Criteria for Candidates:
1. Accredited 4-year college degree ( required; non-negotiable)
2. Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
3. Successful track record of fiscal management.
4. Experience leading successful fundraising efforts.
5. Experience leading, developing, implementing and achieving strategic plans.
6. Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
7. Have the ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
8. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
Preferred Criteria for Candidates:
1. Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual and capital campaigns and the securing of grants.
2. A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management in excess of $1M or more annually.
3. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. ( Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via YMCA of the USA).
The board believes its new CEO should be an experienced leader who has the background and qualities to achieve excellence in the following roles:
Advocate the Vision of the YMCA and be the Heart and Soul of the Operation : Actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, staff and volunteers, and be seen as an active and integral member of the community. Act as an ambassador for the mission, cause and vision of the YMCA within the community, and be seen and respected as a leader. Possess the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the YMCA’s heritage.
Build and Manage the Staff Team: Ensure that a talent management system is in place and executed effectively. The system will ensure that the YMCA has an outstanding, dedicated and culturally competent staff. Establish an individual development plan for each direct report. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie and sense of purpose. Create a learning organization.

Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Work effectively with volunteers, stakeholders and key staff to develop a strategic roadmap that addresses the needs of the YMCA, including defined organizational objectives and tactics. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their charts of work to support the strategies and goals of the association.
Manage Financial Resources: Ensure the YMCA’s financial resources are properly managed and report the organization’s financial position. Use a high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability. Lead organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff to lead their departments to a successful financial operation. Develop and implement stewardship strategies.
Lead a Culture of Philanthropy: Serve as the leader in fundraising efforts by working with the board and senior staff to establish a plan for how the organization will continue to expand, raising contributed dollars for service growth, keeping programs affordable for all and continued facility improvements and expansion. Be able to position the Y as a charity of choice by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors.
Improve Operating Performance: Engage the board in developing an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and quickly address any issues that might arise. Use operational and financial expertise to forecast future needs. Manage and direct the Association’s operations and activities.
