Essential Job Duties

Assist in various research projects primarily involving management of invasive aquatic plants in reservoirs, lakes and rivers in North Carolina. We conduct our research in several settings, including lab, greenhouse, and field locations. Greenhouse work often involves the use of small mesocosms to test novel management techniques and to better understand the biology of aquatic plant species. Field-based projects often include the use of GIS and hydroacoustic technologies for mapping and long-term monitoring of aquatic plant communities. Field sites range from small private ponds to large reservoir systems including (but not limited to) Lake Gaston, Kerr Lake, Lake Norman, Lake Waccamaw, and Jordan Lake. Some management of terrestrial species may be included.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experience in management of invasive species, preferably aquatic plants.
  • Knowledge in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting environmental data for field-based research projects.
  • Knowledge in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data for greenhouse or laboratory research projects.
  • Experience in collecting and entering data into various software programs including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and ArcGIS. 
  • Boating experience, including driving and trailering < 20ft boats with outboard motors.
  • Ability to assist in routine maintenance of equipment and research grounds.
  • Ability to work in outdoor settings under strenuous conditions.
