Office of Information Technology (OIT) Shared Services provides a broad range of core services to support information technology and the mission of NC State. These services include: server, virtual hosting, storage, and backup infrastructure; authentication and directory services; web services; Windows and Linux deployment and configuration management; monitoring and notification services; enterprise middleware services; automated workload scheduling; and research computing services.
The Platform Compute Services (PCS) team within the OIT Shared Services department is responsible for procuring, deploying, operating, and maintaining the enterprise compute and storage infrastructure for the university. The infrastructure management includes physical, virtual, s, and cloud resources. PCS team members are lead developers in the Apache Virtual Computing Lab project, manage virtual server resources supporting university services, provide centralized virtual hosting for campus departments, deliver enterprise network attached storage, backup services, and support the Secure University Research Environment (SURE) a NIST SP 800-171 compliant system.
Essential Job Duties
- This position provides DevOps / Platform engineering across a range of critical infrastructure services.
- Container as a service development, implementation, and management in on-premise and cloud resources.
- Automation of provisioning and management Virtual compute, utilizing tools that enable infrastructure-as-code such as Ansible and Terraform.
- Opportunities to implement CI/CD pipelines – continuous integration and delivery/deployment using GitHub/Gitlab, docker for performance and efficiency.
- Continuous support of central Virtualization, storage, Fiber channel services. Provisioning, sizing, and maintaining to meet compliance and project requirements.
- Virtual Computing Lab development and support.
- Regulated research support, Wwrk closely with teams to support researchers utilizing the Secure University Research Environment system, a NIST 800-171 compliant enclave.
- Work closely with teams across the central organization and college partners to meet university goals and mission.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, an Information Technology degree or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution plus four years of experience in IT supporting enterprise IT environments and cloud based services OR
- Associate’s degree in Information Systems from an appropriately accredited institution and eight years of experience in managing enterprise IT environments, cloud services, or closely related area OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience
Other Required Qualifications
- Practical skills in managing enterprise virtual hosting and clustered service offerings, backup and disaster recovery technologies, vulnerability assessments and remediation, log monitoring and correlation, incident tracking, configuration management, Windows and Linux OS administration in enterprise environments, network topologies, endpoint workstation security protection, and cloud technologies.
- Strong management skills and knowledge. Ability to design, implement, and manage as a service within an enterprise environment.
- DevOps – ability to automate workflows with various scripting languages.
- Infrastructure-as-code utilizing tools including but not limited to Puppet, Packer & Ansible, Terraform.
- Working knowledge in cloud (ex. AWS, Azure, Google), on-premise and hybrid architectures.
- Knowledge of research compliance and security controls, ability to apply security frameworks at an operational level in enterprise environments.
- Experience in supporting strategies and/or solutions to address research and enterprise security compliance efforts, and providing support for NCSU IT architects and team members.
- Experience working as an effective team member.
Preferred Qualifications
- Six or more years of experience in the information technology field.
- DevOps – understand and apply CI/CD pipeline workflow processes to automated solutions.
- Experience supporting large enterprise compute environments focusing on virtualization technologies, DellEMC and NetApp storage devices and Fiber Channel topologies within managed DataCenters.
- Expertise in information technology support and security compliance within an enterprise and academic research space. Knowledge of NIST 800-171, NIST 800-53, and CMMC.
- Strong technical writing skills and experience with the development of technical and procedural documentation.
- Working knowledge of state government rules and regulations.
- Coordination of multiple vendor solutions in a university environment.
- Experience using ServiceNow or a similar call tracking system.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills.
- VMware, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud certifications.
- Other SANS or vendor specific certifications in security topics are a plus.
- Effective communication skills with various types of audiences such as research administration, students, faculty; IT support staff.
