About the Department

The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space, and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost-effective services to the University and ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

As the largest department within the Facilities Division; Facilities Operations is entrusted with the management of a substantial workforce comprising 803 positions. Facilities Operations services the University’s 10 million square feet of teaching, research, and administrative space. We provide maintenance, custodial landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services for most of the University.

Essential Job Duties

As a valued member of the Facilities Operations team at NC State, the Electrician plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient maintenance and operation of various systems critical to our facilities. This includes expertise in electrical systems, HVAC equipment, plumbing, and general building maintenance within the designated maintenance service zone. This role will develop solutions for standard repairs and occasionally non-standard repairs for electrical, HVAC, and plumbing issues.

Key Responsibilities and Duties Include, but not limited to:
  • Handle the construction, installation, and repair of HVAC systems and components.
  • Install plumbing systems and associated equipment/fixtures.
  • Manage the operation, installation, and repair of pneumatic systems components and DDC controls.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, turbines, pumps, steam lines, and related equipment.
  • Analyze faults within electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems and create corrective measures.
  • Develop solutions for standard and occasional non-standard repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulatory standards for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical installations, including preventative maintenance schedules.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must participate in quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks.
  • Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Experience in the electrical trade.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the trades of HVAC and plumbing.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • NC Driver’s License required within 60 days of hire, must be maintained.
