About the Department

The Gage Lab is a research group in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at North Carolina State University. We are collaborating with multiple breeding and genetics programs, including the USDA-ARS and NC State small grains research groups.

Essential Job Duties

The Research Technician will help establish a lab ethos of curiosity, collaboration, and hard work while contributing to the scientific trajectory of the group.

Responsibilities include:
  • Supports research by assisting with experiments, procedures, and tests.
  • Planning, planting, maintaining, and evaluating field, greenhouse, or growth chamber experiments;
  • Performing inter-specific hybridization and embryo rescue, culturing plantlets, and chromosome doubling;
  • Establishing and maintaining large plant populations; use of DNA markers for quality control.
  • Plant tissue sampling and processing.
  • Planting, phenotyping, crossing, and harvesting techniques for crop plants.
  • Assists in data collection and curation, including phenotyping in the greenhouse, growth chamber, or field conditions.
  • Prepare data for analysis and perform basic quality control.
  • Evaluate and summarize the progress and quality of ongoing experiments.
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment, and keeps the laboratory running smoothly by ordering, handling, maintaining, and storing lab inventory and biological material.
  • Cares for plants that are being grown for experiments.
  • Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and executes minor repairs or contacts service contractors.
