Research Specialist

Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University Frueh Lab within the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry is looking for a Research Specialist. The position will provide an opportunity to contribute to research aimed at reprograming enzymes to design novel antibiotics and to gain or enhance skills in NMR spectroscopy. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of the faculty investigator and positive interpersonal skills are a must. The work requires the basic use of scientific methods, procedures, and techniques gained through previous training, but training will be provided for NMR-related tasks.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow established procedures or protocols and utilize aseptic techniques to perform laboratory tasks that may include,

                    o maintaining cell lines.

                    o basic molecular biology (i.e. cloning and single-point mutations)

                    o recombinant protein expression.

                    o biochemical assays.

  • Related determination of activity, sample purity, concentration, etc. to ensure reproducibility.
  • Identify and resolve common problems involved in routine research assays.
  • Operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment for cloning, protein expression, and protein purification (e.g. nanodrop reader, protein chromatography column purification (Akta), etc.).
  • Train users in standard equipment operation and routine lab techniques and procedures.
  • Maintain timely and accurate laboratory records (electronic and written).
  • Collect, organize, annotate, interpret, and store experimental data in electronic format.
  • Perform general lab maintenance duties and miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively to supervisor and team members.
  • Participate in weekly Team Meetings and Data Meetings.
  • Accountable for laboratory management involving tracking supply inventories and ensuring the availability of laboratory reagents and materials.
  • Help perform routine maintenance tasks for an NMR spectrometer, such as quarterly Helium fills, Nitrogen fills, and diagnostic maintenance tests (sensitivity, resolution, etc.). (will be trained)
  • Acquire routine NMR experiments for sample diagnostic (will be trained)
  • Gain problem-solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.
  • The position will progress into more responsibility and research opportunities commensurate with progress.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Excel.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required.
  • Independent and self-motivated, needing little to no supervision.
  • Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across disciplines.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Role/Level/Range: ACRP/03/MA  
Starting Salary Range: Min $16.92 - Max $29.61 HRLY ($48,400 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: M-F, 40 hours per week 
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
