The Role

As we continue to grow we are seeking a Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) to work in our San Diego, CA office. The Manager, Environmental, Health and Safety Manager (EH&S) manages the development, planning, implementation, and coordination of environmental compliance, occupational health and safety programs. This role develops in house policies, procedures, and training programs related to the scope of the department. The position monitors compliance with all related federal, state, and local regulations and handles all contact with applicable government agencies and inspectors. This position has direct supervision of assigned staff in the EH&S Department and manages all site EH&S Programs. The role is also responsible for the management of site Safety Committee(s).

This position is in San Diego, CA.

The Responsibilities
  • Manages site compliance to EPA, APCD, OSHA, DEH, Life Safety Code, DTSC, and City and County regulatory and permitting requirements.

  • Manages the collection, storage, and compliance reporting for all regulated waste activities, hazardous waste paperwork including manifests, training documentation, Source Reduction plan, Excluded Recyclable Materials Reporting and land bans for generated hazardous waste.

  • Supports the Facilities team in the regulatory permitting for applicable emergency generators, air tanks, elevators and boilers on site.

  • Manages company recycling and land diversion programs, Storm Water systems and implementation of Best Management Practices.

  • Manages written programs and inspections including but not limited to Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP), Hazard Communication Program, Biosafety Management Plan, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Emergency Action Plan (manages emergency response team), Energy Control Program, Ergonomic Program, Spill prevention Control and Countermeasures Plan, Source Reduction Program, etc.

  • Prepares and manages applicable EHS training for all site employees as related to Cal/OSHA, DTSC, First Aid, corporate safety programs, etc.

  • Reviews and prepares OSHA 300 logs and manage and complete Loss Control incident reporting, investigations, and follow-up.

  • Manages all EHS documentation and provides summary reports to Corporate EHS and management team on key performance indicators.

  • Manages worker compensation cases in collaboration with the Human Resources Department.

  • Manages industrial hygiene monitoring and assessment, as required for identified hazards (e.g., noise).

  • Manages Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials stored and handled in facility, Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP), Medical Waste Management Plan, and Community Right-to-know requirements.

The Individual

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental and Occupational Health, Engineering, or Life Science, related field or equivalent.

  • Seven years of related experience required with emphasis on emergency management, manufacturing, laboratory, and engineering safety. Additionally, three years of experience in a management or supervisory role.

  • Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to environmental, health and safety.

  • Proficient with word processing, spreadsheet software and PowerPoint presentation programs.

  • Knowledgeable of federal and other regulations, e.g. QSR's, ISO 14001, ISO 13485, CMDR, ISO 45001.

  • Demonstrates commitment to the development, implementation and effectiveness of Quidel Quality Management System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.

Preferred Skills

  • Medical, biotech, or pharmaceutical industry experience.

  • Experience in Sustainable practices related Energy Conservation, waste minimization.

  • General experience with Business Continuity Planning.

  • Professional certification such as CHMM, CIH, or CSP.

  • Current certification in HAZWOPER.

  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid.

The Work Environment

The work environment is representative of an office environment with moderate exposure to laboratory and manufacturing work areas.Flexible work hours to meet project deadlines.May be required to handle blood borne pathogens, decontamination and cleanup of chemical/biological spills, hazardous materials handling and segregation. Minor lifting and carryingof items or materialsup to50lbs.Ability to wear respirator when responding to spills.65% of time spent in meetings or at desk. 35% of time spent walking the site, completing site inspections, performing EHS training, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. At QuidelOrtho, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $145,000 and is bonus eligible or eligible for incentive compensation. QuidelOrtho offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, along with a 401(k) plan, employee assistance program, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, paid time off (including sick time), and paid Holidays.
