Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Lab Manager works directly with the Directors of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Programs at USMSM and coordinates with the IT and Technical Operations of the respective departments at the College Park campus. Regular duties of the position include the following:
General tasks
- Escalate issues that cannot be resolved to the College Park IT and/or Technical Operations team to determine how to move forward.
- Work with hardware vendors to arrange for warranty service for equipment when necessary.
- Report the status of lab operations weekly to the Director of Technical Operations for Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering Program Director at USMSM.
- Perform other tasks assigned by the Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Program Director.
- Set up laboratories
- Initial lab setup
- Daily: As lab rooms may be used by different courses in the same day, ensure needed equipment for each is in place before the beginning of lab session; This includes Electrical and Computer Engineering Course and Mechanical Enge courses as well as any other future degrees that may share space and equipment.
- Communicate with faculty in advance of the semester to identify all parts and equipment needed for courses, order as needed.
- Assist faculty with experiment designs and implementation
- Know equipment operations and help troubleshoot as needed
- Keep consumables (resistors, ICS, etc.) supplied to the lab
- Perform regular testing of equipment
- Liaison with University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland facilities personnel on all building issues that affect laboratories.
- Work with professors to ensure desired software is available in the appropriate labs.
- Ensure professors’ desired software is appropriately licensed for academic use.
- Troubleshoot issues that arise with computers and software in the labs.
- Keep computers in the lab patched and up to date to help prevent security issues and ensure they are compliant with University security policies.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering field
- A minimum of five years of full-time employment in a university, national/federal, and/or industrial laboratory may substitute for the bachelor’s degree requirement
- Demonstrated hands-on ability to build a lab
- Demonstrated ability to build and test electronic circuits
- Working knowledge of electronic and mechanical equipment
- Working knowledge of software to control equipment
- Familiarity and ability to learn and acquire knowledge of new technologies
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently, and with a team, on complex projects and demonstrate competency, diplomacy, and a positive attitude.
- Ability to work and problem solve in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment, prioritizing tasks, thinking proactively, and using good judgment and experience to make decisions and maintain deadlines.
Preferences:
- Extensive experience in building and running a scientific or engineering laboratory
- Expertise in modern equipment (precision electronics, metal and non-metal machining, 3D printing, etc.)
