About the Department

As the largest department within the Facilities Division, Facilities Operations services the University’s 10 million square feet of teaching, research and administrative space and 2,240 acres of Ground and Transportation infrastructure. Using 801 budgeted positions and an annual budget of $57,000,000. Facilities Operations provides maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail and motor pool services for most of the University. The purpose of Repair & Renovation Services is to provide quality services to the NC State University community. These services include new construction, renovations of existing areas, and upgrades of existing areas.

Essential Job Duties

  • This position requires an experienced carpenter with skill sets to alter rooms or add to existing structures using hand and power tools; install and finish dry wall; install ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetwork and counter top installations. 
  • Knowledge of renovation trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment is required. 
  • Understanding of materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety is necessary. 
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, function in at least one other trade and possess general knowledge of other trades is important.

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs journey level carpentry in the Carpentry Shop. 
  • Works on metal or wood stud wall systems. Installs and finishes dry wall, installs ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetwork and counter top installations.
  • Proficient in trim work, hangs doors, drills and sets door hardware, sets windows, removes walls, installs partitions; alters rooms or adds to existing structures using hand and power tools . 
  • Knowledgeable of remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment. 
  • Understands materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety. 
  • Reads and understands blueprints. 
  • Knows and functions in at least one other trade and possesses general knowledge of others. 
  • Assists other trades as required.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Carpentry trade experience.
  • Knowledge of renovation trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment is required. 
  • Understanding of materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety is necessary. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer three to five years experience working in a university setting to renovate building space by installing and finishing dry wall, ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetwork and counter top installations.

Required License or Certification

  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to obtain a valid NCDL within 60 days of hire & must be maintained.
