Overview of the Red Hat Shelton Challenge:
The Red Hat Shelton Challenge is a six-day, residential program built on the Shelton Leadership Center’s core values – integrity, diversity, social responsibility, and compassion – and is designed to help high school students enhance their capacities to become values-based leaders. This immersive program is designed to transform potential into real-world skills through mentorship, self-reflection, and shared discovery. The Challenge is for rising 10th – 12th grade high school students.

Three week-long camps are held at NC State University:
  • Challenge 1: June 9 -14, 2024
  • Challenge 2: June 23-28, 2024
  • Challenge 3: July 14-19, 2024
  • Take II: July 23-26, 2024
    • Building upon the foundation set during the first year of the Shelton Challenge program, the Shelton Challenge Take II is ideal for students desiring to deepen their leadership effectiveness. Participants in this six-day summer experience strengthen their skills in conflict resolution, time management, decision-making, and project management. Students are placed in hands-on leadership roles and participate in 360-degree evaluations with mentors.

Overview of Staffing Levels:
Each team of 10 students are led by a Peer Leader (PL), a Coach, Mentor, Trainer (CMT), and a professional Instructor – the structure allows for a continuum of learning.

Work Schedule

Schedules vary based on program needs, Typically 7:30 am to 8-9 pm on camp days. There is an additional full day of training, making 6 days in total

Other Work/Responsibilities

Coach/Mentor/Trainers (CMT) are college-aged students who guide teams, facilitate reflections, and evaluate team performances, bringing college-level enthusiasm to the Challenge. Most (but not all) will have participated as a student, and/or served as a PL. As a result of serving as a CMT, you will:

  • Have the opportunity to deepen your own leadership.
  • Build relevant professional skills, such as the ability to work on diverse, intergenerational teams, communication, and critical thinking, while shaping young minds.
  • Contribute to a transformative experience that impacts your local and state communities.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead daily activities and end-of-day reflections, fostering a reflective and engaging team environment.
  • Orchestrate goal-setting activities, guiding the team toward shared objectives and values.
  • Coordinate morning ceremonies and energizers to contribute to a positive team atmosphere.
  • Collaborate with peer leaders to establish team expectations, goals, and facilitate regular meetings for effective communication and support.

Candidates must commit to being present for a full week of camp activities (6 days + early arrival for staff training) as well as approximately 10 hours of staff training scheduled during the month of May. Candidates arrive on Saturday for staff training, camp begins on Sunday and ends on Friday

CMT’s usually serve one week of the Challenge.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Commit to being present for a full week of camp activities (6 days + early arrival for staff training) as well as approximately 10 hours of staff training scheduled during the month of May.
  • Must have strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work in a team environment.
